The Supreme Court ruling to issue a TRO on the opening of Corona's deposits is nothing less of the 2nd envelope issue during the impeachment trial of Joseph Estrada. In a desire to prevent the opening of possibly incriminating documents, the SC is preventing the impeachment court from finding out the truth.

The Supreme Court is now under siege and I do not think that it’s undeserved. I’ve always hated plagiarism having been taught in school that it is a sin far worse than murder. However, our Supreme Court protected its own justice who was caught doing precisely that. To make matters worse, they threatened to sanction the lawyers who publicly complained.

However, what the lacks in eloquence, he is able to a bit compensate through end results. The skillful maneuvering of defense lawyer Serafin Cuevas made the procedure lengthy and made the prosecution lawyers look like grade schoolers but still, the public now knows that Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona has continuously purchased prime real estate through the past couple of decades through installment payments that lasted for only a few months for every purchase. Let's see how Corona will be able to defend this. Does he have enough money to finance those purchases?

Impeachment is a numbers game because it is a political exercise. An ad about laptops sale reminds me of Ricky Carandang, a well respected journalist appointed as a communications or press secretary of P-Noy. The guy got major flack for buying a few pieces of laptops that a congresswoman deemed very scandalous. Geesh! She should have made a fuzz with her congresswoman seatmate who among others is involved in massive illegal profiteering in at least two telecom deals valued at billions of pesos.

Chief Justice Renato Corona is desperate to hang on to his corona (crown). Through his people at the courts, he is calling for judicial independence and a rejection of the President's alleged intrusion in the judiciary.

To begin with, Corona already knew that midnight appointments are very wrong and unconstitutional.

Two Presidents ago, Fidel Ramos tried to appoint him during the ban and the Supreme Court and the Judicial Bar Council rejected it. During the Gloria Arroyo's reign, they did it again and this time, with more force. they were able to get through.

That is what defines the Corona court.

People were against Corona's apppointment for good reason. They knew that he was appointed there to prevent any legal action against Gloria Arroyo.

Corona confirmed the people's fears when instead of proclaiming that his court will be fair to everyone, he declared that he will be independent (of Malacanang).

His declaration was tantamount to saying that he will be against Malacanang.

He deserves this impeachment.

The judicial system is not being destroyed by Noynoy Aquino.

It was Gloria Arroyo and Corona who started its decline.

At the airport, I passed by an old gentleman who got a free round trip ticket because the airline company broke his carry bag. Despite the airline’s act to appease him, the old man was still irritated stating that no free ticket can compensate for the travel inconvenience because he now has to carry around a broken bag. I was tempted to but in and tell him to buy a good samsonite briefcase next time but I kept my peace. There’s no use to rub in his nose the fact that he is carrying an inferior brand.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo fought hard with her “Right to life” campaign. She claimed to have a dire spine condition and tried to make a Speedy Gonzales at the airport. However, her doctors later testified that she is in already on her way to recovery and yes, her lawyers are trying to pressure them into not telling the truth. It was also noted that the Gloria M. Arroyo was wearing skinny leather pants and heels when she tried to leave? As some ladies say, tight pants, leather ones specially, are hard to put on. How can a lady with spine trouble do it? As for the high heels, even guys would be able to imagine what it can do to a lady with spine injury.

Today, the same lawyers and spinsters changed tact and are now using the “Right to travel” campaign. I don’t know what else they’d say next.

To my mind, it is very clear that the former president is trying to flee and has seriously lied more than once. Remember that “I am sorry” press conference that she held amidst the election wiretapping case?

This lady should be forbidden to leave. The right of the state in this case is much bigger than anyone’s right to travel.

Merry Christmas at the NAIA

In the news, they reported that "Merry Christmas" greetings will be disallowed for airport employees. A few hours however, the Presidential spokesman clarified that they will not enforce such ban.

I don't have much time now but let me tell you that a lot of "Seasoned" employees at the airport has perfected the "Merry Christmas" scheme. They say it in such a way that makes one feel that it is compulsory for people to give them money. I know this for a fact because I experienced this long before I heard about it over the radio.

I asked an airport employee where the restroom was and when I said my thanks, he replied "Merry Christmas" in a way that made me realize that we was trying to bully me for money. The nerve of that guy. He didn't know that I was travelling with a government official. Had he pressed on, I would have had him fired.

Also please take note that comments about our "worst airport" give emphasis on the culture of corruption that prevails. No amount of architectural works will remove that. The first thing that we should do is privatize the entire operation so that those corrupt government employees can be taken out.

As I sat down to prepare for today’s post, I got a text from my lovely daughter asking if she accidentally left her eyelash enhancer in my car when I drove her to school this morning. I replied that I’ll check later and get back to her.

With that done, let me get back to the topic at hand. It seems that there is so much chutzpah in the Arroyo camp. After using her fascist circular against her enemies during her ten year rule of the Philippines, she is now asking the courts to declare such a government action illegal simply because her term has expired and the new government is using it against her.

How low can man get? Now, I know.

This year, I am not sure if I will be in the mood to accept most Holiday Party Invitations because work load is killing the party animal in me. However, there are people that I actually want to see and party with during this year’s Christmas. I am hoping that I can gather them all in one event and have a grand time. Call it efficiency but attending just a single Christmas party is also healthy. Very little added calorie and alcohol in my body is not only good but also economical.

WAR OR PEACE IN MIDANAO

According to official statements, about soldiers, some of whom are training for scuba courses in the army special forces were sent to strike at a bandit group suspected of beheading members of the Philippine Marines (a couple of years ago) and kidnapping local residents. The problem is, they encountered members of the bandit group (Abu Sayaff) augmented by members of a rebel group (MILF). In the firefight, about 18 soldiers perished and a few missing.

According to a statement by a surviving soldier, the enemies were in position and waiting for them in ambush. The whole place has also been evacuated and very quiet. Another survivor also claims to have seen some of his colleagues ran out of ammo captured alive. They later on turned up dead.

In MILF’s statement however says that the military bombarded their positions with 105mm howitzers before launching an attack in their government recognized territory. They claimed to have simply fought back.

The military statement however claims that the site of the encounter was 4 kilometers short of the rebel territory.

MY TAKE ON THIS:

Various media units have claimed that in the area where the gunfight happened, there is a creek separating the MILF territory and the areas infested by the bandit groups. And whenever an encounter between government people and the bandits occur, the MILF crosses the river and helps the bandits fight the government troopers. A lot of MILF rebels are said to be relatives of the bandits.

SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT DECLARE AN ALL OUT WAR?

A lot of people are now calling for the end of the ongoing ceasefire and declaring an all out war against the MILF. The call is reminiscent of the Estrada administrations move that brought the MILF to crumble within a few days. What happened was very humbling for the MILF with their several years of boisterous and arrogant pronouncements of strength.

However, we should never forget that the Estrada action resulted to about a million refugees, as claimed by Ex President Fidel Ramos. It also failed to completely wipe out the rebellion. That would have taken much much longer, resulted to more refugees, more dead soldiers, lots of money spent, etc.

We should properly investigate the incidents and amend the terms of the existing ceasefire. Rebels should be mandated to make sure that no bandit is allowed within ten miles of their camps. They should be made to outlaw preparations for war like the building of weapons factories like the ones found by attacking soldiers in Camp Abubakar.

They should be made to swear that they will report lawless elements that try to approach them and turn over any rebel with a warrant for a criminal offense unrelated to rebellion like kidnapping of civilians. For the meantime, the rebels should also be made to sit tightly in their camps as the military vigorously runs after the perpetrators of last week’s firefight.

The military leadership, on the other hand, should be made accountable for the loss of soldiers lives. With so many resources on their side, it is unforgivable for them to lose in combat.

Lastly, the public should refrain from being the cause of war. Hawks among the government and military can stage “massacres” of some of our soldiers and/or civilians in order to provoke the population into forcing the government leadership into calling for an all out war.

Let’s continue our path towards peace but always be on guard for war.

My daughter is such a fan of ipod shuffle. She uses it in the school bus to and from the school and also uses it whenever she is studying. I myself can’t understand how can anybody study while listening to loud music but somehow, she is able to do it. Late Clemency?

While I am no P-Noy apologist, I do not like the way some people are lambasting the president for granting executive clemency to a prisoner who unfortunately died a few days before he was pardoned. They say that the recommendation was forwarded to him a long time ago. Does that mean that there should be haste in approving recommendations?

When a prisoner’s sentence is promulgated, does it come with a clause that requires executive clemency for good behavior and/or failing health? When a criminal commits a crime, does he do it because there is a surefire recipe for pardon?

Crimes are not lightly committed and sentences are likewise not dispensed like a comedy show. An executive clemency therefore, should be well contemplated before being dispensed. Prisoners dying prior to clemency is indeed a regrettable event but it is not at all the fault of the president. The crime committed remains to be the sole fault of the criminal and never is it transferred to the pardoner at any time.

Let us not forget the original victims of the crime. Is justice served when the clemency is given? Did it send the right message to criminals? Or did it render the penal system ineffective?

I remember hearing marketing lines that say SmartBro gives out speed as fast as 2Mbps. In my several years of SmartBro experience, I can’t remember having experienced that. I looked up Smartbro’s website and it says that the download speed can go up to 1mbps.

Now, I feel that this website is not updated and that they are now claiming that it is up to 2MBPS.

Anyway, I feel that my internet is unusually slow the past few days that I did a speed test.

The result speaks for itself. My speed is less than 100KBPS.

Now, I know what Smartbro will say. They will make an excuse that 1 or 2 MBPS is their company’s maximum speed. However, if you will ask them what is the guaranteed minimum, they will be unable to answer. I know that for a fact for they have given me such a stupid excuse the past few years.

This reminds me of the great American General Douglas Mac Arthur who was called back from retirement to lead troops in retaking Japanese occupied countries in Asia and eventually leading Japan and reestablishing it as a peace loving and modern country.

Gen. Natalio Ecarma III retired a few days ago. However, the United Nations leadership believes that he did a splendid job as its commander of UN troops in the Golan Heights. Because of that, they requested that he be given an extended tour. President Aquino called Ecarma back to active duty but this time, as a naval reservist.

With so many active duty generals in the Philippines and everywhere else, it is indeed very impressive of Ecarma to have been requested to be back.

I can’t believe takeover that ASEC Torres of the LTO is still in office. Being caught on film “leading” a very hostile corporate raid of LTO systems provider Stradcom has made the public lose its faith in her and now, the president himself is spending so much time defending her. Buying my recent batch of fuji finepix reminds me of the time when I was a student living out on a small allowance. I took tons of photos and of course, needed to buy film all the time. It all seems to be quiet in the implementation of the no wang wang policy of the president. I notice that even cops are a bit afraid to indiscriminately use the device. Of course, there is the occasional rotten egg who tries to get away with it. I really hope that they will get caught on television and shamed to high heavens.

But while we Filipinos are trying hard to start behaving, there are foreigners who think so lowly of us and blatantly violate our laws. There is this Korean who was recently caught using his illegal siren at the most major road in the country's capital.

The suspect, identified as Oh Hoon Kwon, was seen by Robredo himself, driving a black Starex van (with license plate PID-916) with a siren on along Edsa highway in Mandaluyong City late Sunday morning.

His car was confiscated and the guy charged. I hope his face is shown on TV and viewed by everybody who knows him in Korea. I hope that when he eventually gets deported, everybody in that country will tell him how shameful it is to have done it.

As I shopped around for bowhunting equipment for this coming long weekend, I wonder if I will need a permit to carry my modern hunting bow out of my residence. Allowing Emergency Lights

My car has a LED Light Bar for emergency purposes. I sometimes have meetings in airport offices necessitating the need for the product when crossing runways. I also do a lot of long road trips at night and in dark highways where speeding buses often lingers at the opposite lanes, a powerful LED light warns other vehicles of your presence from longer distances. I just hope that the traffic police will not take offense.

The best way to get rid of corrupt officials is not as easy as the best way to get rid of blackheads. Blackheads can be cured and its damages corrected but corrupt officials can multiply faster than the worst cancer and the can be very difficult to determine. My newgy ping pong table reminds me of the way government in this country works – back and forth. Mud is thrown in several directions and at the end of the day, nothing gets done. It is not only in politics where this happens. Radio commentators have long been castigating the government for its failure to curve over speeding and daily vehicular deaths in the country’s “Death Highway” but when the traffic cops started strictly implementing the speeding limit; they get bullied and mocked, short of calling them stupid, for arresting drivers who go a few miles over the speed limit. There’s this congressman (Rafael Mariano) who, instead of thanking the Aquino administration for giving an immediate 4 billion direct subsidy to the poor and hungry farmers, is even calling it an insult.

He says; “The Aquino government is exploiting the farmers’ situation in order to utilize billions of taxpayers’ money in a corruption-prone rice subsidy program similar to the fertilizer fund scam and conditional cash transfer scheme,” Mariano said.

“It is the height of irony that farmers, the rice producers themselves, are now being targeted by the government’s so-called rice subsidy. Instead of addressing demands for genuine agrarian reform and direct agricultural support to farmers, Aquino further insults the people behind the plow by giving them crumbs,” he said.

Mariano said that such a scheme only exposes the government’s failure to address hunger and poverty and inability to implement genuine reforms.

He said that the free distribution of land to farmers through genuine agrarian reform will directly helpfarmers feed themselves and their family.

While I agree that employers should make sure that they pay equitable wages, I understand that they must also price themselves within competitive levels. Professional managers and business owners are therefore mandated to find a good balance between good wages and proper returns on every peso invested in the business.

In this country and elsewhere, a lot of business people are heavily infected by intense greed. However, a lot has been written about that topic and I will just write about it at a later time, if I still feel like doing so. What I would like to write this time is something that is very unpopular. It is about the greed and tyranny of my fellow poor.

Just this afternoon, I listened to radio interviews of union members who cry out against a low wage increase that is being proposed by employers. While I agree that a lot of greedy employers have very high margins, I also know for a fact that for every company making a lot of money, a lot more are bleeding from low margins and high debts.

In the interview, there was a lady who lamented that the P13.50/day wage increase cannot buy sufficient bread for 10 children. In the first place, the P13.50/day is just an increase. It's not their their daily wage. Secondly, I'd like to ask why does she have 10 children? She’s poor, isn’t she?

I am not anywhere near as poor as her but I cannot imagine being able to afford even half that number. My friends, if you cannot afford it, why do it?

While I agree with the textbook approach being advocated by the group, I beg to disagree with them just a little bit. The Philippine economy has a very high incidence of corruption and giving too much public money to the government in form of taxes will simply expose a lot of cash to corrupt officials. I believe that minimizing the taxes being paid by the people will result to a more equal distribution and spending and it will lead to more jobs and a better economy. Giving the government too much money will only result to a lot of money being hoarded overseas.

UP Geologists Found Leak in Magallanes Pipeline

I've known UP President Fred Pascual for more than 10 years now. I used to call him up at his ADB office and have a few bottles of beer with a group of friends about once a month. Now University of the Philippines (UP) Prexy for about a month now, I am surprised to find out fro him (through the Inquirer) that it was geologists from the UP National Institute of Geology (NIGS) that found the source of the great gas pipe leak at the West Tower Condo in Makati. This happened after foreign (and expensive) experts failed to find the problem.

Wow! I know that lots of Filipinos have talent but I've long been afraid that advances in technology has been slow to reach the country and that we are increasingly lagging behind other countries for quite sometime now. The UP NIGS feat shows that at least, there are still highly competitive areas where we can excel against people from richer countries.

Yesterday, a cab (TYS- 160) was photographed loaded with 14 school children. The cab was apparently operating during early mornings as a school bus (taxi) service. Since 14, even if they’re just kids, is such a huge number for a taxi cab, the driver decided to pack four of the kids in the rear trunk. A radio reporter, who was driving around looking for something to report, spotted the cab and took photos. The cab is reported to have the plate number TYS 160.

Hoping to take photos of the errant driver, the reporter followed the cab, which recklessly crossed an intersection despite a red light. When the reporter’s car was about side by side the overloaded cab, the taxi driver made a sudden turn and was able to get away. The driver apparently noticed that he was being covered.

That driver should be criminally charged with reckless imprudence, endangerment and perhaps, frustrated homicide/murder. Overloading the cab in such a manner is clear recklessness and a sign that the driver knowingly placed the passengers’ life in danger. An overloaded cab clearly distracts the driver’s attention and restricts his side and rear view. His mobility and ability to safely steer the car is seriously hampered making his car a rolling coffin.

Jail the errant driver and let’s hope that nothing like this ever happens again.

In the Philippines, the latest news report puts 47.1% of the country's total deposits in the National Capital Region (NCR). Checking the website of the National Statistics Coordination Board (NSCB), I noticed that as of 2007, the NCR is inhabited by only 13% of the country's population.

It is not a wonder then that people continue to flock to the overpopulated Metro Manila. It is in this area where money is. There is not much to go around in the provinces at this point and it is but logical for people to go where the food is more abundant.

Whenever I think of weight loss supplements, I used to remember the guy who played the character “Jaws” in a James Bond movie. I think, it was in Moonraker. Nowadays, the name that enters my mind is the embattled USEC Rico Puno OF DILG. I agree with people when they say that government people are on the take when it comes to Jueteng. But somehow, I find the witness accusations against Puno a bit unbelievable. I will explain it in my next posts.

Enjoying my all cigars, I read the newspapers to enjoy the Saturday morning. However, I realized that the way to enjoy a quiet day does not at all require newspaper reading. News is mostly about chaos in all parts of the world and having to read it is not at all a good relaxation idea. So tomorrow, my plan is to drink coffee, work on my facebook account and enjoy a fine cigar.

Will it be masks that look like the distorted faces of politicians that people dislike or will it be entirely different? In the U.S., they have masks that spoof every American president and people think its fun. I don’t know if that will be cool for the general public in the Philippines.

I have read in the papers that DILG USEC Rico E. Puno is a graduate of the University of the Philippines at Los Banos. I remember that campus for the beautiful mosaic tiles that adorns the guard house in the school’s main entrance. I think that such décor has been there for several decades but up this time, it still looks very new. Go Rico Puno! I know that you are a good man and that DILG is an easy post for you. Rid it of the corrupt employees who have lorded the government for years. Shoot ‘em all! :-)

Good Contractor

As I drove through the South Luzon Toll way, I was greeted by the sight of portable toilets that lined the middle lane. It turned out that the Skyway contractor, DMCI was awarded the contract to build the Alabang extension and that was probably a smart government decision. DMCI’s construction sites are well kept and sanitary, from my point of view. This is in sharp contrast to the construction sites of a lot of other companies that gives me the impression of being very dirty and of poor quality. Good work, Sid Consunji!

Manila hostage taker's last interview

The disgruntled ex cop who held Hongkong residents hostage and killed a number of them, was interviewed moments before he shot the first victim. In fact, the first shots were even heard over the radio and the hostage taker claimed to have fired on two hostages. Here is the part

EX CAPT. ROLANDO MENDOZA: Basura to sakin, di ito ang kailangan ko. Ang kailangan ko ay desisyon nila, reversing or not reversing. Yun lang yung thank you for the effort of the mayor and the vice mayor, di ko kailangan yang sulat ng yan sir.

MICHAEL ROGAS (interviewer):: Ano po ang plano nyo ngayon, ano po ang gusto nyo?

MENDOZA: Walang nilalaman yan eh, walang ibig sabihin nun, wala walang ibig sabihin nyan sir. Ang sinasabi nya lang paiimbistiga nya, eh kung ganun din wala din mangyayari dyan, wala sir. Wala sa kin ang papel na yan kapag yung sinabi nya yan dismiss na talaga, walang mangyayari dyan sir.

To early for you to gang up on Robredo

Father Panlilio, Grace Padaca, Robredo... If one will be judged by the company he keeps...

Jesse Robredo is a good man. He performed very well as a mayor in Naga for so many terms. The people of Naga is one of the most critical people in the country. It is after all, a city with very good schools. For sure, they know that Robredo has been in office for such a long time. However, the guy who does not operate a private army (at least, the people doesn't see any) has never failed to work wonders that they have not seen any viable alternative to him.

Should there be a group trying to gang up on a guy that is barely one month old in his job, it must be a group that has been operating at the DILG. These people must have felt threatened with their new boss that they are trying to get him out.

Leave Jesse Robredo alone, at least until he had time to show what he can. Do not throw roadblocks upon road blocks at him. Start caring for the country, at least for a change.

Go Jessie Robredo! Clean up the local governments.

I like the idea of taking out the SK. That thing has done nothing but politicize and corrupt our youth.
